While some students may choose a trade or a nontraditional route for higher education and career training, many are on the path to college after high school. One of the primary concerns for parents and educators is making sure their students are well prepared for college, especially college writing. Whether students are analyzing themes in Shakespeare, preparing a marketing proposal for a business class, or writing a lab report after organic chemistry, they will be required to write.
During the first year of college, so much of what students encounter is new—new places, new information, new schedules, and new instructors. Providing a bridge to college-level writing, University-Ready Writing (URW) prepares students to tackle whatever professors assign. High school and college students learn effective note-taking strategies as they write précis (summaries), annotated bibliographies, and essays, tackling assignments of varying lengths from one paragraph to several pages. While students may be experienced with MLA Style for citations and bibliographies, this course also includes APA Style, which is required for many disciplines. URW provides students familiarity with common writing assignments before they even arrive on campus.
