Getting Started with Reading Great Books

On Day 7 of IEW’s Twelve Days of Christmas Giving, we are circling back to one of the two most important things we mentioned in Day 1: getting started with reading great books. This day has a brand new gift, so be sure you are registered for the event to receive the email with links to the gifts.

IEW customers love reading to their students. Reading books to children is better for their attentiveness, better for their intellectual growth, and better for their health. Reading aloud also fosters family culture. As Andrew Pudewa said in a recent podcast, “There's something about reading a book together with people that creates a shared experience and a shared context. I've used the analogy when you read a book with your family aloud and everybody's hearing the same book. It's a bit like going on a trip together. You're meeting new people, you're seeing new places, you're able to imagine new experiences, and you're doing it together.”

The first gift today is a brand new talk from Andrew Pudewa: Full, Ready, and Exact: How to Become a Better Thinker. The title is taken from Francis Bacon’s quote “Reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man, and writing an exact man.” Andrew explores the vital roles of reading, conversation, and writing as tools to foster curiosity, creativity, ethical decision-making, and meaningful interpersonal communication.

We are very excited about the next gift. If you have listened to Podcast Episode 506, you have heard hints about this gift. The 1000 Good Books Project is compiling a library of audio books from a list of 1000 good books. Garreth Winstead, one of the founders, explains, “Sitting down and reading a thousand books seems very daunting, but using audio books as a way of integrating that into education, into children's lives and free time…[it is] a lot more feasible to really steep yourself in this literary tradition.” Be sure you have signed up so you can receive a free one-month membership from the 1000 Good Books Project. The long winter days of January are the perfect time to listen to these high quality audio books.

If you haven’t listened to Podcast Episode 506 with the Winsteads, we are including that episode on the gift page as well as Podcast Episode 496 “Become a Read-Aloud Parent.” These episodes provide motivation and encouragement to sit down and read (or listen to) a book with your children.

P.S. Don’t forget to use the code for free standard domestic shipping on any online order from December 26–January 6.
