Additional Source Material to Teach Structure and Style

Nov 13, 2020 | Posted by the IEW Blog Team

We recently received a request from a parent who just completed Structure and Style for Students Year 1 Level A and is waiting patiently for Year 2 Level A to launch in January. While she waits, she was wondering what resources we might have to reinforce what her students learned. Her request brought to mind the many teachers who are using Structure and Style to teach, using their own materials, but who might also appreciate having some additional suggested content to address the units. For all of you who are either looking for supplemental sources or who are creating your own material, we decided to do a little digging to locate additional source material for Units 1 through 7, which we share in this blog post. It’s our hope that it will help you as you wind up this year.

One of the first resources we would like to suggest is our Writing Source Packet. If you have a Premium Membership, by the way, the PDF of this resource is included as a membership benefit. Packed with potential sources for Units 1 through 6, this resource has plenty of material to keep your students engaged.

Here are some additional resources organized by units:

Units 1 and 2

Unit 3

Unit 4

Unit 5

Unit 6

Another Free Resource for You from IEW: Kangaroo Rats Mini Books
Use selections in the Writing Source Packet: Unit 6.

Unit 7

Moreover, if you have worked through our teacher-training course, Teaching Writing: Structure and Style, you are able to create your own writing lessons. Blog posts Part 1 and Part 2 of “Flying Solo with Teaching Writing: Structure and Style,” offer great tips for organizing your approach and materials. If you have created or found any resources that you feel are especially useful, please share them with us by emailing We would love to share them with other parents and instructors as well.
