Homeschool 101: Podcast Episode 295

Nov 10, 2021 | Posted by the IEW Blog Team

For podcast Episode 295, Andrew and Julie welcomed into the studio Yvette Hampton, a homeschool mom and the producer for a new film called Schoolhouse Rocked. Five years in the making, the film is a documentary about home education and aims to dismantle misconceptions and negative biases about homeschooling.

Yvette and her husband, Garritt, director of the film, began their home education journey when their first child was ready to begin school. Their original plan was to have their child attend a private Christian school because, in Yvette’s own words, the couple believed that “homeschoolers were weird.” Something didn’t sit quite right with their original idea for schooling, however, so some homeschooling friends suggested they attend a homeschool convention. The rest, as they say, is history. The family jumped into home education with eager excitement.

When the couple decided to create a film that would demystify what homeschooling actually is, one of the first people they reached out to to interview was Andrew Pudewa. That was approximately five years ago. The Hamptons spent the next five years crisscrossing the country, interviewing people connected to the homeschooling world. The film is now ready to view. Tickets can be purchased here.

Whether you are a brand new homeschooler, a not-yet-begun homeschooler, a veteran homeschooler, or anyone in between, this film and this podcast episode will be both encouraging and educational.
