Ask Andrew Anything: Special Education Edition, Part 1: Podcast Episode 259

Back in January, IEW held an online conference called “Success in Teaching Writing: A Special Education Writing Conference from IEW.” It was an incredibly popular event, attended by hundreds of people located all around the world. Conference attendees were thrilled to find an event dedicated to teaching them to help struggling students learn how to think critically and write with Structure and Style.

With so many attendees, we found we received a lot of questions. Unfortunately, Andrew and Julie didn’t have enough time during the event to address the several hundred questions that arrived, so after the conference our customer service team diligently reached out by email to answer as many questions as they could. For podcast Episodes 259 and 260, though, we would like to feature an extended edition of “Ask Andrew Anything” where Andrew and Julie focus specifically on some of the questions they received. During this podcast they address the following queries:

  • Do you have any suggestions for when a student looks at the key word outline but doesn’t know how to fill in the other words to make a sentence?
  • How do I find age appropriate reading and writing material for a dyslexic child who has learned to read much later and is now just learning to write? Most of the learning to write material I find is geared toward a younger audience, and my son is just not interested in it.
  • How do I integrate strategies for dyslexic students to help middle school students stay on track with what society deems normal?
  • My dyslexic son loves to create stories orally because spelling is difficult for him. How can I encourage him to continue writing when he finds it so painful?

If you have the same questions, you will definitely want to tune in to this podcast episode as well as next week’s, which will address additional questions from the event. If you would like to watch the recording of the conference, you can find it at this link.
