Choosing a Package: Structure and Style for Students

Jul 10, 2025 | Posted by the IEW Blog Team

A common question that IEW’s customer service team receives is “What is the difference between the Structure and Style® for Students packages?” Trying to discern the differences from the pictures on the website can be tricky, so we are here to provide some clarification. Perhaps a thousand words are worth more than a picture when it comes to choosing a package.

The Structure and Style for Students Year 1 courses are available in three packages: Basic, Basic Plus, and Premier. Since this is where you begin, we have assembled packages that give you all you need to start. Year 2 courses are available only in the Basic package because you may need a different level of Fix It!® Grammar than what the package would include. For more information on how to progress through the levels and the differences between Year 1 and Year 2, read this blog post.

The Structure and Style for Students Basic package includes everything you need for a single student: a spiral bound teacher’s manual, a student packet, a student binder, and 24 videos (available as Forever Streaming or DVD). For an additional student, purchase an additional binder and student packet.

The Structure and Style for Students Basic Plus package includes everything in the Basic package plus Portable Walls™ for Structure and Style® Students and a Fix It! Grammar teacher’s manual and student book of one level. The Portable Walls is a tri-fold reference packed with updated unit models, style illustrations, extensive word lists, and a critique thesaurus. It can be reused year after year.

Because the items are already packaged together, the level of Fix It! Grammar cannot be changed. If you need a different level, we recommend that you purchase the package and add on the desired level of Fix It! Grammar. The package price does reduce the overall cost of the individual items. You can keep the level that is included in the package for future use, pass it along to a friend, or sell it.

The Structure and Style for Students Premier package includes everything in the Basic Plus package and adds two nonconsumable resources: A Word Write Now and the Teaching Writing: Structure and Style package with Forever Streaming. A Word Write Now is a thematic thesaurus containing a treasure trove of fascinating words to add interest and flair to any composition. Teaching Writing: Structure and Style (TWSS) is our primary teacher training seminar designed to equip parents and teachers as they assist their students in the Structure and Style for Students video courses. It will help you answer questions that your student may have as he or she works through Structure and Style for Students. The TWSS Seminar Workbook serves as both syllabus and workbook for the Teaching Writing: Structure and Style seminar and also contains charts, word lists, sample lesson plans, and more. The Premier package comes with Forever Streaming. If you prefer DVDs, that requires a special order that is available only by calling our office.

IEW recommends ordering the Premier package, but you need to purchase a Premier package only once since the items specific to that package are nonconsumable resources. Once you own the Teaching Writing: Structure and Style seminar, you have IEW’s flagship product to equip you to teach writing K–12.

As Andrew Pudewa says, our materials are like ice cream—the more the better! No matter which package you choose, your students will receive Mr. Pudewa’s humorous, incremental, and effective writing lessons that provide clear daily assignments and include vocabulary words, grammar and literature suggestions, and lesson plans for teachers. The choice is yours!
