Dannah Fritz

My introduction to children with reading and writing difficulties began when my son was diagnosed with dyslexia the summer before first grade. My husband and I were devastated since we are both huge readers. The educational psychologist recommended an Orton Gillingham approach for reading intervention, so I began researching. Luckily, I found The Barton Reading and Spelling System that summer. After two years of hard work, our son was reading above grade level. Soon after, we couldn’t keep a book out of his hands. I decided to become certified and work one-on-one with other children. In fourth grade I decided to homeschool my son as a result of his dysgraphia. Writing was not being explicitly taught in school, and as a student with a writing disability that was what he needed. I found IEW and never looked back. My son went from being a fourth grader who couldn’t write a sentence to getting As in high school and college in any writing task. I taught using IEW’s method for many years at our co-op and also for my private tutoring students. It is extremely satisfying to take a student who hates writing to one that is confident.
