How to Teach Writing with Confidence: Podcast Episode 339

Sep 14, 2022 | Posted by the IEW Blog Team

Here at the Institute for Excellence in Writing, our mission is to equip teachers and teaching parents with methods and materials which will aid them in training their students to become confident and competent communicators and thinkers. This week we shift the attention from confident students to confident teachers and teaching parents. How can they teach writing confidently?

In Podcast Episode 339, Andrew and Julie address the question. In order to answer the inquiry posed, though, it is first important to understand why writing can be overwhelming. Andrew provides the foundation by unpacking the multifaceted task of writing. Once teachers understand its complexities, they can then break down the process into manageable steps that make the skill both teachable and learnable.

IEW’s Structure and Style method employs source texts, key word outlines, and the practice of retelling information back in order to separate the complexity of writing so that both teachers and students can find success. Success often breeds confidence, which then helps enable competence!
