Units 1 & 2: Introduction to IEW - Level A, (Grades 4-8)
8:30–10:30AM

Students will be taught to create a Key Word Outline—the foundation for all IEW writing—and retell, represent, and dress up that work using various stylistic techniques.

Grade levels are approximate; no previous IEW experience is presumed.

Cost: Introductory Student workshops: $25.00/participant
(Save with the Early Registration price of $25 through April 18, 2019. After this date the regular registration price is $30.)
Teachers and parents may observe at no cost.

Participants: 15 minimum, 25 maximum


Advanced Workshop
Student should have some IEW experience or have completed one of the Introduction to IEW classes offered earlier in the day.

Unit 3: Story Writing (Grades 3–8+)
11:00–1:30PM

Students will learn to extract key ideas from a story and organize that information based on the Story Sequence Chart, then apply selected stylistic techniques.

Cost: Advanced Student workshops: $30.00/participant

Advanced Workshop
Student should have some IEW experience or have completed one of the Introduction to IEW classes offered earlier in the day.

Introduction to Rhetoric: Grades 5–10: 2:00 PM–4:30 PM

This two-hour Advanced class for students Grades 5–10 will present the ancient arts of Rhetoric using key word outlining and selected stylistic techniques.

Students will engage in two of the ancient arts of rhetoric: encomium and invective. Learning the art of encomium, students find something to praise and praise it. Learning the art of invective, students find something to condemn and condemn it. As they work, students will also discuss other methods of persuasion and have the opportunity to use ethos, pathos, and logos in their writing.

Grade levels are approximate. Class size is limited to 30 participants.
